Local authorities in England are following Scotland and Ireland by introducing a mandatory licensing requirement for Short Term Lets. STL’s have taken off in recent years with demand for Holiday Lets and Short Term Accommodation being at an all time high.
The supply is vast and ranges from off grid huts in back gardens to 10/12 bedroom conversions and every other type of property in between.
Many of the quirky properties tucked away aren’t likely to cause much of an impact on the Residential Housing Stock.
There are many properties that would be suitable for residential letting being used as STL’s and in some areas in England, this is contributing to a shortage of permanent housing stock.
By bringing in landlord registration and insisting on planning permission being obtained the councils can better monitor the impact STL’s are having on the local communities.
Here at Diment HQ, we support landlords with all residential lettings and due to government legislation and mortgage hikes many property owners have made the switch to STL or Selling out of the residential housing market all together.
We have to remember that there is room for all sorts of property strategies however, we NEED residential landlords in order to provide permanent housing across our entire country.
Landlords existed long before social housing and without them we will have a housing crisis,...but that’s a topic for another post!
